Kaoruko's Biography


Kaoruko Pilkington grew up in Japan, listening and singing American music.
In Japan. she worked as a singer-piano player in Tokyo nightclubs for 10 years.
Her love for American music eventually brought her to the US.
She came to Boston to study at Berklee College of Music in 1990.
There, she majored in Vocal performance/Jazz composition, and graduated in 1996.

While at Berklee, Kaoruko studied with:
Charlie Sorrento, Jan Shapiro, Bob Stoloph, Mili Bermejo (voice)
Herb Pomeroy, Greg Hopkins (jazz composition), others.
Her studies with her mentor, jazz legend Hal Crook started at Berklee and continued more than 10 years. She learned jazz improvisation, jazz theory and arranging from him.

She is actively performing as a jazz singer and band leader of the kaorukojazz ensemble at various jazz venues such as Acton Jazz Cafe, Amazing Things Arts Center, WICN, and others.
She released her self produced CD, Joy Spring in 2000.

Kaoruko has been teaching voice since the late 1990s. She is a member of NATS (National Association of Teachers of Singing).
In addition to teaching at her studio in Ashland, she is on the faculty at Boston Conservatory,
voice instructor at Wellesley High School, Charles River School, and ensemble & voice instructor
of the popular Dayjams rock music camp.
She also gives lessons and clinics in Japan.
She is on the assistant faculty of the Somatic Voicework™ certificate course at the University of Massachusettes, Dartmouth.

In recent years, Kaoruko has been studying vocal technique and pedagogy with Ms. Jeannette LoVetri, highly acclaimed international voice specialist based in NYC and the founder of the Somatic Voicework(tm) method. 
She has completed Ms. LoVetri’s  pedagogy classes at the Contemporary Commercial Music Vocal Pedagogy Institute at Shenandoah Conservatory in Virginia and is a certified instructor of the Somatic Voicework(tm).
She assists Ms. LoVetri at the U Mass Dartmouth certificate course every year. She also organized the Somatic Voicework(tm) workshop at Wellesley College, inviting Ms. LoVetri.
